       Abstract

Volcanoes rise.

Rain and river

wash them to the sea,

in grains.

From that sand

our hands lift

worn down mountains

up again.

Womb of muscle

or clay

warms a seed.

Sun and rain

quicken it.

Two make one

unite, double, again.

Half reaches high

half hunkers down

Cities rise.

In ourselves,

the secrets of the seed.

The patterns by which plants make the most of earth and sky - leaf patterns, flowers and seed arrangements, root and branch structures - all share a common geometry that fills as much space with as little material as possible. So plants enjoy every ray of sun, every drop of rain within reach. Form + Function = Beauty.

Geometry ( literally, the "measure of the earth" ) suggests that such beauty oftencontains or exhibits a consistent relationship between growth and form. The way a single cell divides, doubles, grows, is a phenomenon that happens within regular, mathematical proportions of ratios. The Greek called that ratio the "Golden Mean."*

Circle and spiral both reflect similar relationships - the former being an expression of the whole, the latter of the process. Since the universe moves in circular paths, it's not surprising that circles and spirals are everywhere in nature, including the patterns of the leaves adn seeds in plants.
